Do You?

I wanted to show you the quilt that Martha, one of the owners of Calico Station, is working on. Isn't is gorgeous? She is going to enter it into QuiltFest. My picture does not accurately represent the colors. I love the applique and the half square triangle sashing.

I'm not at the point in my quilting journey that I would consider entering a quilt into any type of show. I use my hobbies to relax me, to have fun, and to grow the creative side of me that frankly I didn't know I had. The thought of entering something into a competition would just take all the fun out of it for me. I'd be curious to hear of any of your experiences with entering your projects (not only quilting) into shows. Was it an experience you'd repeat? Did you get any value or take aways from the experience?

It's a rainy day in Florida today. Go figure - I was going to start walking outside again this morning. I really need to get back into a regular exercise routine. I'll take the rain as a sign that I need to do something else this morning!

I thank each of you for visiting, reading, and commenting on my blog and thank each of you who have your own blogs. I learn so much from you and feel so inspired by you! Thank you!

No, thank you! I've never entered anything in a show and never even considered it a possibility until I met a girl not much older than me who started entering quilts in the Houston show back in the late 90's when she was in college. Wow! That took a lot of courage! Stil not sure I would ever make anything I considered show worthy...

WOW! That's all I can think of to say!

I have never entered anything I've stitched in a show. But, I have to agree with you that it would take the fun out of the hobby for me.

I'm entering a quilt in our guild's show for the first time this week! I'm like you, I quilt for fun, not for show, but I was "bullied" (said with a *wink*) into entering something because I am the chairperson for this year's exhibit. I chose a quilt that I worked on with my granddaughters to enter because I thought that they would enjoy seeing it on display. The guild's show is not a judged show, simply viewer's choice, so the quilts with the most votes win. A judged show would be very different...

Hi Jackie, What a beautiful quilt your friend has made! Listen up,okay? I encourage you to show your quilts every opportunity you get. I started showing very early, and it has been a wonderful experience. Never have I received a judges critique that I disagreed with. They aren't there to hurt anyones feelings, and often make comments that are helpful. You can learn a great deal. I think the trick is NOT to make a quilt just because you think a judge would like it. Just make what you love, doing it with the best effort that you are capable of, and then if a judge loves it.........it's simply the cherry on top. After all, if none of us entered shows, there would be none to attend. I can tell you those ribbons are addictive, and that is a stone cold fact! Hope to see you in a show someday soon. How are the Cairns? Michele

I have never entered anything in a competition..only put a quilt in "exhibit" in a show and that was fine...as it wasn't stressful. Your friend's quilt is a beauty!!!

I'm with you. Having something so perfect would throw me into a tizzy. I'm a "good enough" kind of gal that's for sure.

What a gorgeous quilt Jackie!! Thanks for sharing it with us. I've never entered a show, but my friends tell me the judges give good advice on binding and little things you can change or include. Sounds like a good learning experience to me.

Ohhhhh I just love that quilt...totally amazing. I have seen your work and it is so worthy of a contest.

One year I entered a small wall hanging in a fair .... I was so nervous because I lack alot of confidence and was so afraid they would hate it.

So when I went to pick it up....it had a blue ribbon on it, this sounds silly but I had to keep from crying...it was like a validation to me....maybe that my work was good enough, that I am good enough? Okay....so I am a little strange....sorry.

Thank you too, Jackie for sharing your projects, thoughts and so much other things of you with us!
No, I don't think I would make a quilt for a competition. Then my goal for quilting would not be the same, just like you, to relax!
Have a lovely week and hope you can start walking tomorrow. Will you be doing it every day? xo

Wow, that's some quilt! I entered a quilt or two in a quilt show once. It was an interesting experience, but I don't know if I'd do it again. :D

What gorgeous quilt! That should be a very competitive piece.

I have no interest in competitions myself. I'm not enough of a perfectionist in the first place. And I really just like the act of making things in and of itself.

The quilt is beautiful! I love the sashing too! I haven't entered a contest either. Something to think about though. Thanks for the suggestion.

I enter my quilts in shows all the time, but live in a pretty rural area where the shows are small. I don't enter with the expectation of winning, I just think the more quilts there are to look at, the nicer it is for the folks attending the show and the hard working quilters who plan and organize a show. I just love looking at quilts, all kinds. If no one entered their quilts, there would be no show!

And, you're welcome!

I've never made a quilt with the intention of entering it into a show - don't think I could stand the stress. I have entered a couple of quilts in one of the few shows in the UK, but not in the copetition section, just in the theme bit. I also entered a small wallhanging in our local group's show one year - well I had to really, the theme of the contest was my idea - and won the viewers choice, which was an amazing feeling.

I have not entered my things into a competitive show yet, and probably never will. I have had some of the dresses, etc.... in a fashion show and in exhibits, but not competition. You are definitely talented enough to enter competitions, though, but if it would take the fun out, don't do it!
I love your blog, and I love getting to know you. You and I would be fast friends if we met in person.

Over here there are no such competition shows. At least I have never heard about anything like that. And if there were any they wouldn't be for me, lol. The quilt group I once belonged to used to make expositions, and that's a totally different thing.

I know entering a quilt in a show is way out of my league, but I have no earthly desire to do it, anyway. My quilts look just good to me, but I am not interested in having them judged, that's for sure! :) What a beautiful quilt that is.

I entered a quilt in a show once. I totally designed the whole thing. The only comment was "Nice binding". Never again! As long as my family oohs and aahs appropriately, I'm happy!

I BAWLED when I read about Tyler Southern! What a great place you live in that they did that for him, who gave so much for our freedom. That is so neat.

That quilt is FANTASTIC!! I have never entered anything of mine in a show. I did have a few scrapbooking pages published in scrapbooking magazines. My only textile claim to fame was the long arm quilter who had my quilt (for over a year) put it in an exhibit and it got a lot of compliments. That was enough for me. My stitching and quilting has always been for me and my family. If they enjoy it, that's enough of an award for me.

The quilt is indeed beautiful!

I have been entering quilts in my guild's show for the last couple of shows, but they were never judged shows. I found it fun to see them on display and have people look at them. This year, my guild decided to go with a judged show, and at first I decided no way was I going to subject myself to a judge's criticism. But enter I did, I just hope the written critique I recieve doesn't pursuade me to give up quilting altogether.
