Baby Steps

This past weekend, I walked into my sewing room for the first time in 2 weeks and sat down at my sewing machine. I decided to sew the buttons on to one of my Stitchers Garden blocks. My Bernina sewing machine offers a stitch (#17 on my 440QE) specifically for this purpose. I had no idea that there is a standard size for button holes. Who knew?

Bernina also has a specialty foot to sew on buttons - #18. See how it has that prong in the middle? You use it to line up the foot in the right place. When you stitch the button on the thread goes over that prong so some give is built in and it does not get sewn on too tight. Neat, huh? I sewed on a dozen buttons in just a few minutes. The biggest pain was clipping threads. I really love this feature of my machine because I hate to sew on buttons.

Here's the completed block with the buttons. Evidently I didn't notice the border was crumpled before taking photos.

Here is a close up of some of the details.
So I sewed on my buttons, took these photos, turned off the lights and left the room.
Maybe next weekend, I'll do a few minutes more?

You did beatiful job using your machine Jackie!
The block is just beatiful! I love how you use decorative stitch to quilt the background on the block!

Happy sewing!

Your block turned out just darling! How neat to see such a buttonhole foot. Who knew, is right! I'm a lifelong Bernina owner and have never seen that foot! Thanks for sharing.

It's a beautiful block. I love seeing how your button sewer on-er works. How cool is that? Definitely take baby steps. There's no reason to force yourself to sew if you're not up to it. Hope you're getting to relax!

My machine will sew on buttons too. I've never tried it but after reading this I think I will when I get home from AZ. Your block is wonderful! Great details!

Gorgeous block. I love that yoyo in the center.

My old Singer can do buttons, but I've never tried it. I guess I don't mind doing them by hand. Yours do come out with really even stitching though so maybe I should try it for kicks.

Great job! I love the button feature on your machine. Buttons are great accents and so much easier if the machine does it for you.

Perfect! I love the colors too. The 18 foot can tack ribbons, charms, even hooks and eyes in place. It is a great foot to have.

Oh Jackie, don't you just love your 440QE? I have one as well and I'm so glad I bought it. I used to have a wonderful old Pfaff that I would use to sew on buttons. I haven't got that far on my Bernina yet. I really must go and buy that #18 foot.

I'm enjoying your "Stitcher's Garden" blocks. I think they're all lovely so far and you're managing to keep up with them very well. I look forward to seeing them all put together. :o)

This block looks great. How convenient that your machine has such a programme. And it seems to be very easy. Now you made me curious and I'll have to look if my machine can do this as well. Would be really great ...

Never knew that either Jackie and have never tried to sew my buttons on by machine. Your block is adorable.

P.S. - And YES you will feel cooler if you work on a Christmas project. It really works or I am not an elf...lol.
