One Year Later...

A finish! Yes, it's small but it's a finish nonetheless. One that has been waiting almost a year! This is my first paper piecing project. It's from Carol Doaks Show Me How to Paper Piece and is a wonderful first project. I started this in a class last February and like it often happens, it got pushed aside while I worked on something else. As I finished it up on Sunday, I looked at it and realized my piecing skills have improved since then - which thrilled me. Then as I stitched in the ditch I realized one day I'd look back at this and notice that my stitching in the ditch improved since I worked on this project. I'm looking forward to that day!

I want to hang this in my sewing room as Valentines Day is coming up soon. How do you hang your mini quilts on drywall? I'm not sure I want to be poking a bunch of holes in the walls but how else would I hang it?
Sunday, we went to The Columbia Restaurant in the historic district of St. Augustine. It is one of my favorite places to eat. They have the best flan in the world- I never even liked it before. Here's a glimpse inside.
Jacob, Me and Chris - we're all stuffed by the way!
Happy Stitches to you all!

Oooh, I like your Valentine quilt! Not sure how you could hang it up without making holes in the wall. How about one of those hook thingies that 3M makes where you can remove it again once you're done with it? That restaurant in St. Augustine looks so cool. It's funny as I just finished reading a book set in the 1750s and 1760s where St. Augustine was the capital of the new colony of Florida for the British.

I love your Valentine piece. I do have a couple of quilt "rods" in place around the house and I just rotate small quilts to hang there. I figure that I will always want at least quilts in those couple of places, so I didn't mind putting those holes in the wall AND, if I do change my mind (or we want to sell the house), I can have the holes filled before we'd paint the walls.

What a cute Valentines project. I know what you mean about our improvements in quilting. It is fun looking back at projects we thought we did such a wonderful job on isn't it..lol.
Great picture of you and the family...looks like you had a great day.

I love the restaurant. I love the quilt.
My suggestion for displaying it...hang a sturdy cafe style curtain rod in the desired location. Wall anchors and/or stud mount installation will do the job well. Make it long enough to hold any quilt you may want to display. Get some heavier duty cafe clips. Hang your quilt. Enjoy the fruits of your crafty labors ;)

So cute!!! Makes me want to dig out the Valentine fabric. A couple of stick pins will work great! Or I wonder if painters tape would hold it. That wouldn't hurt your paint.

Very nice quilt!!!
Congrats on your finish :)

This paper piecing technique looks so cool. I've never tried it, but seeing your beautiful Valentine hanging sure makes me want to give it a go. Stitch in the ditch is hard for me too... that needle just wants to get out of its rut! But yours looks lovely.

Hi Jackie, 3M makes these wonderful removable hooks for walls, so no holes to poke and you can move then as needed, then I get those plastic circle things at like joanns, sew them on the back and put them on the hooks, for wall hangings i usually do a circle in each corner. i can email you a picture of the circles i'm talking about cuz i can't remember the name of them, they are just a white plastic and they come in a few sizes. the hooks i'm talking about we get at loews or home depot - hardware store.

Your mini-quilt is so CUTE!!! You got done just in the nick of time.

That restaurant looks awesome. One of these days Steve and I will have to get up there and have a look around.

What a cute quilt! and thanks for the link to a beginners paper piecing book. I've been wanting to try it out for a long time but every project I looked at was way to scary to start with.

I am envious of your classes you get to take, YOu did a great job on the wall hanging. What I have done in the past is use pins...you take your wall hanging and then pin in each corner, with the pin not going straight but kinda forms a triangle with the wall....hard to explain but it has worked for me and so you only have a pin prick in the wall...

HI Jackie! Congratulations on the finish! The quilt is adorable!

I remember when you blog about it because I have that book, too. I haven't started my projects yet!

I purchased a quilt frame that will hold up to 12'' minis. You could use it ad a table topper or I think you buy a one of those picture hanging strips but I am not sure if they will stick to the fabric. OR if you put 2 hooks ( 3M Command brand) and then you can hang your quilt the usual way. I hope this helps!

Happy sewing!

What a pretty heart mini quilt. My daughter has used those hooks that are supposed to stick to the wall, and then when you want to take them off you just pull the little tab thing at the bottom. They work great for her. I wonder if you could attack a small loop at the back on the top corners and hang it on two of these hooks?

That quilt is adorable. I have just been thinking about a mantel quilt for Valentine's day and have to go dig through my pink stash.
You could try velcro for hanging it but that might still damage the wall.

I am jealous, Jackie...I love the Columbian...they have an awesome salad with this really unusual dressing...I think it has Heinz 57 steak sauce in it or something like that??!! Have I ever told you that I was born in St. Augustine??!! Yep, I am a home girl!! LOL!

So glad you enjoyed your time with the "boys"!

I love the quilt too...beautiful! And thanks for your comments on my blog...it's so nice to know that someone is actually reading my drivel! LOL!

HAPPY STITCHIN'

congratulations on the wonderful paper pieceing project Jackie - Looks pretty awesome to me! I love that you finished it up just in time to enjoy for February. It will look great on your wall. I LOVE the columbia - it's about time for me to visit there again - I love the 1905 Salad and the black bean soup with cuban bread is divine! The Guava cheesecake is my fave dessert and I don't even like cheesecake! Mel

SO cute! For temporary hanging I stitch rings onto the back of the quilt and use those removable adhesive hooks. Works great!

Congrats on the quilt finish. It's so pretty. And although paper piecing takes awhile, it's so worth it. Perhaps you could figure out a way to put some hooks in the ceiling? Or, install something that allows you to change out quilts seasonally, like a rod with clips?

Very nice quilt!! It looked llike it was fun to make. It makes me want to get out my quilting stuff and sew away!! I need to fix my grandmother in law's quilt I made for her, It was my first ever quilt and I didn't sew all the layers together very well. There is alot of puckering. I should really take a class. All of your pieces are coming out just beautiful. I can see your techniques improving with every piece. Beautiful nicely done!!

Congrats on finishing your cute Valentine quilt. I do not have any advice about hanging. Since DH is an artist and the 'Gallery' keeps changing, our walls have more holes than swiss cheese. I am so jealous of your 'date' with such handsome guys at such a fancy restaurant.

What a beautiful quilt, Jackie! I love it. I did a bit of paper piecing but never completed the quilt--story of my life. It's fun, though!

I enjoyed seeing the pic of the restaurant. I mistakenly never associate Florida with having much history, though my history teachers would cringe at my admission. I know it's wrong, so I am glad when you & Melody show pics that hit me upside the head. ;) Love the pic of you & your 'boys'!

A beautiful finish, Jackie!

To hang your quilt, why not hang a pole-type curtain rod and use clip rings to hang the quilt? Then you can swap out the quilt for different holidays/seasons.

very pretty Valentine's mini!
I hang everything on 1 nail and make a split hanging sleeve on the back of my quilts so that no matter how wide it is, it will hand on that 1 nail. Then I put a wooden skewer through the sleeve - the kind you get at the dollar store for BarBQing.

Hello Jackie---you have commented on my blog a couple of times and I suddenly realized---I had never been to yours.
I have enjoyed the last half hour reading through your past couple of months worth of posts. And I MUST say---what HANDSOME boys you have ;0)

On one of your most recent posts, you mentioned the blanket stitch (or was it the button hole?) Anyway---when I bought my new machine with all the bazillion different decorative stitches, my favorite still remains to be the blanket stitch. So simple, yet so perfect for so many things; applique and machine-binding to name a couple.

Happy Saturday
